We’ve included some information about eligible activities for each of your LAA Wings BRONZE, SILVER, and GOLD awards.
As a pilot develops his/her flying experience from the LAA Wings BRONZE Award through to GOLD, each stage of the scheme requires Achievements to be completed. The list of achievements you may wish to consider completing towards your LAA WINGS award can be found below. Whilst this list is not exhaustive it provides examples for pilots to select a combination of achievements which will suit their personal choices.
• IR(Restricted) Rating
• Night Rating
• Instrument Rating
• Mountain Rating
• Aerobatics Rating
• Addition to EASA PPL of another class rating (SEP, TMG, MEP)
• Addition to EASA PPL of a Seaplane class rating
• Addition to NPPL of another class rating (SSEA, SLMG or Microlight)
• NPPL or EASA LAPL converted to EASA PPL
• Class Rating Instructor certificate or Flight Instructor certificate
• Display Authorisation
• Radio Navigation certificate
• Ground Instructor certificate
• LAA Strip Flying diploma
• LAA Cross-Border and Sea Crossing checkout (Cross Channel checkout)
• LAA Proficient Pilot diploma (new!)
• Royal Aero Club Records, Racing & Rally Association Air Race School
• Differences training on the following: retractable undercarriage, VP/CS propeller, turbo charger, pressurisation, nosewheel to tailwheel and vice versa, single power lever controls and EFIS (two items of differences training must be completed to credit one achievement)
• Conversion to three additional types (three specific type conversions are credited as one achievement)
• Complete a LAA World Record
• Complete a Royal Aero Club handicapped Air Race
• Complete a British Aerobatics Association Aerobatic Competition
• Complete a British Precision Flying Association Precision Flying Competition
• Complete a Royal Institute of Navigation TOPNAV Event
• With prior approval from the LAA, complete another organised flying event.
These do not have to be accomplished in any particular order. For BRONZE LAA Wings you must show that you have completed one achievement, three for SILVER LAA Wings (which could include the one from your previous application for BRONZE) and, similarly, five for GOLD LAA Wings. You may submit alternative achievements, but must include the relevant supporting documentation with your application.
3. Seminar Attendance
Currently approved Seminars are:
• LAA Online Courses (count maximum of two)
• LAA Class Rating Instructor seminar
• LAA Air-Ground Operator course for issue of the CAA Radio Operator’s Certificate of Competence (ROCC)
• LAA Engineering course (Wooden aircraft structures, working with aluminium, Rotax, etc)
• GASCo Safety Evening
• GASCo Flight Safety Forum
• FLYER one-day CRM course
• Flight Instructor Refresher Seminar
• Military Civil Air Safety Day
• Weather School courses (various providers)
• Irv Lee’s PPL Masterclass
• RAeC “Three R’s” Race School Day
• NATS visit with infringements presentation
• Jabiru/CAMit Engine Course, Southery
Evidence of attendance should be presented in the form of a letter, or a certificate, or a stamp in pilot’s log book etc.
For BRONZE LAA Wings you must show that one of these approved seminars has been attended, two different seminars from the above list for SILVER and three different seminars from the above list for GOLD.
4. Extended Navigational Challenge
You are required to show logbook evidence to demonstrate that the extended naviagational challenges for each award have been completed.
Bronze: A total flight distance of 200 nm or greater with at least two intermediate take-offs or landings.
Silver: Completion of Bronze navigational challenge plus an additional total flight distance of 400 nm or greater with at least three intermediate take-offs or landings, OR an additional total flight distance of 200 nm or greater with a sea crossing (>20 nm) and at least three intermediate take-offs or landings.
Gold: Completion of Bronze and Silver navigational challenge plus an additional total flight distance of 600 nm or greater with at least four intermediate take-offs or landings, OR an additional total flight distance of 400 nm or greater with a sea crossing (>20 nm) and at least four intermediate take-offs or landings.
